Abstract
752,675. Sparking plugs. NAPIER & SON, Ltd., D. March 3, 1955 [March 26, 1954], No. 8963/54. Class 7(4) In a sparking plug comprising a rod-like central electrode 13, Fig. 1, there is an earth electrode constituted by a frusto-conical sleeve 17 which surrounds the central electrode and is partially flattened to form an approximately oval gap with the central electrode the sleeve being exposed tc facilitate adjustment of the spark gap by distorting the sleeve. The plug body 10, which contains the insulator 11 seal 12 and cen. tral electrode 13 than increases in cross-section toward the sparking end, has an intermediate threaded portion 16 and the sleeve part 17 that projects into the combustion chamber. The active end of the electrode 13 has flat sides 21, Fig. 3, which are in spark gap relationship with the corresponding surfaces of the oval end of the sleeve. Holes 23, Fig. 1, may be incorporated in the sleeve 17. The sizes and shapes of the electrode 13 and the oval end of the sleeve 17 are such that should the electrode break it is prevented from falling out out of the plug.
