Abstract

752,595. Applying adhesive strip. UNILEVER, Ltd. June 3, 1954 [June 4, 1953], No. 16427/54. Class 73 [Also in Group XXX] 117 Adhesive strip 100, Figs. 4, 6 from a reel 101 is applied by a roller 106 and brush 107 to the top side of cartons A2, A3 intermittently advanced in endwise spaced relationship a distance equal to the distance between cartons measured from centre to centre so that the strip is secured to both cartons and bridges the distance therebetween and while the cartons are at rest the bridging strip is severed by a knife 48 and the severed ends folded down and secured to the .opposed ends of the cartons by rollers 52 which together with the knife are movable vertically in the space between the cartons. As shown, the apparatus is duplicated to secure and fold an adhesive strip 113 from a reel 114 to the underside and opposed ends of the cartons also. Horizontal rails 8 receive and guide wheels 9 of a reciprocating carton-advancing trolley 10 consisting of two parallel main beams 11, 11<SP>1</SP> carried by the wheels 9 and joined by cross-beams 12, 13. A rack 14 is fixed on the main beam 11 for engagement with a driving pinion 16 which also engages a fixed rack 17 secured to the rails 8. Pivoted to the rear and front of the trolley are arms 20, 25 bearing respectively catchers 22, 27 and urged upwardly against stops 24, 29 by springs 23. The pinion 16 is mounted for free rotation in a fork 38 on a connecting rod 37 driven from a main shaft 31 via a crank 35. Because the pinion 16 remains engaged with the fixed rack 17 during reciprocating movement of the rod 37, both a reciprocating translatory movement and a rotary movement are imparted to it and hence a reciprocating movement is imparted to the rack 14 and hence trolley 10 with a stroke double that of the pinion 16. The vertical movement of the knife 48 and rollers 52 is effected by a cam mounted on the main shaft 31. A cam also mounted on the shaft 31 controls the rocking movement of two arms 77 to which is hinged a frame having two pairs of stops 79 for holding the cartons in exact spaced relation during handling. When a carton is brought between L-shaped guiding members 111 and under a guiding member 123 with a resilient tongue 124 into position A1, Fig. 4, an arm 99 (Fig. 1, not shown) is forced upwards by the carton and a cable 92 is pulled to bring a clutch mechanism into operation for driving the main shaft 31, whereupon the trolley 10 is moved to the right and the bevelled catchers 22, 27 are pressed down while sliding under cartons in positions A1, A2, Fig. 4, and finally engage behind the cartons in these positions. Movement of the trolley to the left now brings the cartons into position A2 A3 and a carton which was already in position A3 is discharged from the machine, at the same time, the adhesive strip is applied to the cartons and bridges the distance between them. On movement of the trolley again to the right, the cartons remain in the positions A2, A3 and the severing and folding of the strip on the opposed ends of the cartons takes place. The strip reels may be arranged in a horizontal plane where the strip is to be applied to the front and back sides of the cartons.
