Abstract

752,333. Spray burners. SHELL REFINING & MARKETING CO., Ltd. Nov. 13, 1952, No. 28641/52. Class 75(1). [Also in Group XXIX] In apparatus for spraying a liquid into a stream of gas, for instance a liquid fuel burner or spray drying apparatus, either the liquid or the gas or both flow through control means which impart to the fluid, with increasing rates of flow, a continuously increasing component of flow in a direction transverse to the general direction of fluid flow in relation to the component in the general direction. In the liquid fuel burner shown in Fig. 1 a plug member 3 forming the base wall of a vortex chamber 2 has formed on its periphery three pairs of fuel channels 6, 5, 4, the individual channels of each pair being diametrically opposed and of identical helical form but the pitch of the channels decreasing from the channel pair 6 to the channel pair 4. A control plate 8 is rotatably mounted in fluid tight contact with the plug and has two arcuate peripheral diametrically opposed slots 9, 9a. These slots may be situated so that they do not register with any of the fuel channels and by turning the control plate from this no-flow position the slots successively register with the channel pairs 6, 5, 4 thereby providing increasing fuel flow up to the maximum when all three pairs of channels are in register with the slots. In a modification the pairs of peripheral channels are replaced by pairs of ports drilled obliquely through the plug 4, the angles of. obliquity varying to provide successively increasing transverse displacement of the downstream ends from the upstream ends. A second set of such pairs of ports is provided at a different radius from the centre of the plug and the control member has a pair of arcuate slots at each corresponding radius. The outer set of ports consists of three pairs and the inner set of two pairs. A similar control means is used in the apparatus shown in Fig. 4 for controlling the air flow around a burner 7 mounted centrally in a cylindrical combustion chamber 31, the air entering at 32 and passing through three sets of obliquely drilled ports disposed in concentric rings in a barrier plate 33, each set having identical ports at 90 degree spacing, Fig. 5, and the co-operating control member 43 having three sets of four arcuate slots. At minimum air flow only the four ports 48 of least obliquity are open and at maximum air flow all the other ports are open but the ports 48 are closed. The air flow cannot be cut off completely. The control member is rotated by means of levers 36 projecting through slots in the combustion chamber side wall. The fuel control means for the burner 7 is constructed as described in the modification above and the shaft 8a of the rotatable slotted member projects through the outer end plate 39 of the combustion chamber. The shaft 8a and the levers 36 may be coupled together and operated by remote control means. The burner 7 may be replaced by the burner described in Specification 699,162. In apparatus in which a gas-is controlled by control means according to the invention a liquid may be controlled by the means described in Specification 752,334. Specification 398,421 is referred to.
