Abstract

752.159. Engine crankcases. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. June 30, 1954 [Sept. 21, 1953], No. 19198/54. Class 122(3) [Also in Group XXII] A crankcase for a radial cylinder engine comprises spaced annular cylinder support sections 2 formed by segments 5 secured together and each having a connecting rod opening 4 therein and bearing support sections 15 secured to opposite ends of and between the cylinder support sections 2. The segments 5 are joined by vertical welds 11 and the openings 4 are provided with flanges 7 for the radial cylinders and access and drain openings 6 and 8 respectively are formed in adjacent segments. The cylinder and bearing support sections are welded together, as at 27, and an engine accessory support section 21 and a base section 19 are welded to the top and bottom bearing sections 15 respectively. Lubricant passages 17 'are formed in the bearing sections.
