Abstract

750,661. Securing wiper arms and pulleys to shafts. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. April 14, 1954 [April 27, 1953], No. 10925/54. Class 80(2) [Also in Group XXIII] Relates to securing wiper arms and driving pulleys to oscillatory shafts in a windscreen wiper mechanism. Each wiper arm shaft 38, Fig. 2, is screw connected at 40 to a locking sleeve 42 rotatable within but restrained from axial movement in a fixed bearing sleeve 32. Freely mounted on the inner end of the shaft 38 are the pair of pulleys 64, 66 to which are respectively secured driving cables 24, 25. The opposed faces of the pulleys 64, 66 are recessed to form a chamber 78, Fig. 8, housing a coil spring 80, one end of which is secured to the hub 64a of the pulley 64 and the other end to an ear 66a of the pulley 66. Moreover, the opposed faces of the pulleys are serrated, as shown at 64b, and 66b, respectively, whereby the pulleys may be clamped together in different angular positions against the torsion of the spring 80. The outer face of the pulley 66, Fig. 2, is provided with fine serrations 86 which are engageable by more widely spaced serrations 88 on a pressure disc 72 non-rotatably secured to the shaft 38. By operating a nut 44, integral with the sleeve 42, the shaft 38 can be moved axially relatively thereto to clamp or unclamp the pulleys 64, 66 and the disc 72. When unclamped, the pulleys 64, 66 rotate relatively to each other under the action of the spring 80 to tension the cables 24, 25. Moreover, the shaft 38, at the time of unclamping, may be rotated relative to the pulleys to accurately determine the parking position of the shaft; the fine serrations 86 and wide serrations 88 allowing a fine parking adjustment. On reclamping the parts, the cables 24, 25 will transmit oscillatory motion to the shaft 38 through the disc 72. The outer end of the shaft 38 is axially slotted at 50, Fig. 2, and also provided with a peripheral groove 48. The wiper arm 54 has secured thereto a key member 52 and a spring clip 58. The member 52 is received in the slot 50 and the spring clip 58 has a, portion which snaps into the groove 48, so that the wiper arm is releasably secured to the shaft.
