Abstract
750,177. Conveying solids in a liquid stream. BRITISH HYDROMECHANICS RESEARCH ASSOCIATION. Nov. 3, 1954 [Aug. 17, 1953 ; Feb. 5, 1954], Nos. 22627/53 and 3490/54. Class 102(2). Apparatus for conveying solid particles, e.g., coal, in a liquid stream comprises a carrier 2 provided with pockets 10 that each have two apertures, one unobstructed and the other covered by a screen 11, and the carrier is moved relatively to a housing 1 so that in one position, a pocket aligns with a hopper 4 and is filled with the solid whilst the screen 11 connects with a drain 5 and in another position, the pocket aligns with an inlet 6 for liquid under pressure and the solid is carried into the outlet pipe 8. Fig. 1 shows two pockets 10 formed in a reciprocating plunger 2 and the housing has two inlets 6, 7 and two outlets 8, 9. Alternatively, the housing may have two hoppers and one inlet and outlet. In modifications, the carrier is in the form of a rotary or oscillating disc and the pockets have apertures opening into the flat surface or the pockets comprise segmental chambers in a drum and the solids may enter axially or radially. In a further form, the pockets are formed as inclined bores in a rotary cylindrical member.
