749,779. Moulding polytetrafluoroethylene &. EDISON SWAN ELECTRIC CO., Ltd. Aug. 4, 1954 [Aug. 7, 1953], No. 21880/53. Class 87(2) A method of manufacturing lengths of synthetic plastic comprises passing the plastic in loose form through a restriction duct of progressively reduced cross-section, vibrating the wall nf the restriction duct at high frequency to compact the plastic material a nd thereafter passing the material through a heating zone in which the plastic is consolidated. The process is applicable to the coating of strip material, e.g. wire, with electrical insulating material, e.g. polytetrafluoroethylene, which otherwise is reluctant to flow. The wire 1 or other strip material, which may be of circular or other cross-section, is fed, with loose granules of polytetrafluoroethylene 3, through a duct which tapers at 4 and has flexible walls of rubber, plastic or thin metal. High frequency, e.g. supersonic, vibrations are applied to the duct walls through liquid, e.g. oil, in a vibration chamber S and are derived from a magnetostrictive oscillator 11 which imparts vibrations to a diaphragm 10 which extends across an opening in the wall of the vibration chamber. The heating zone is provided by a radiant heat oven 17 in which the compacted polytetrafluoroethylene is sintered and consolidated. Heat is prevented from reaching the duct 4 by baffles 15, 16 and a water cooling device 18. The strip 1 may be omitted and the method applied to the extrusion of solid rods, or, with the use of a suitable core, to the extrusion of tubes.
