Abstract

Surfaces are provided with a coating containing calcium oxychloride by applying to them a prepared composition containing calcium chloride, magnesium chloride, or both, calcium hydroxide, and water, the proportion of the calcium hydroxide being at least sufficient to combine with the chloride or chlorides to form the hydrated oxychloride having the formula Ca4Cl2O18H30, and the water being present in such excess that little or no formation of the said oxychloride takes place, and allowing the water to evaporate to produce the required concentration for such formation. The composition may be in paste form, the amount of water present being such that the concentration of chloride is, for example, less than 20 per cent. in the case of calcium chloride; it may be made from a powder consisting of calcium or magnesium chloride, or both, and calcium hydroxide in a proportion at least sufficient, and an amount of water not more than sufficient, to form the said oxychloride. A small proportion of calcium oxychloride may be added to initiate its formation from the composition. Ammonium chloride, sugar, glycerine, silica gel, bentonite or colloidal clay, carbonates or basic carbonates of alkaline-earth metals, zinc or magnesium, ammonium bicarbonate, water soluble resins, or emulsions of synthetic resins, e.g. polyvinyl acetate, or of bitumen, may also be included.
