Abstract
A motor fuel additive comprises a petroleum raffinate, obtained by the sulphuric acid refining or solevnt extraction of petroleum distillates, of a viscosity of 2 cs. at 20 DEG C. to 100 cs. at 50 DEG C., and (a) a fatty acid containing at least 12 carbon atoms and/or a polyhydric alcohol ester thereof, (b) an ester of an aliphatic alcohol containing less than 6 carbon atoms and a aliphatic acid containing less than 6 carbon atoms, and (c) as a corrosion inhibitor, an organic compound containing nitrogen, oxygen, sulphur, phosphorus and/or other elements of groups V and VI. Compounds referred to under (a) are fatty acids obtained from vegetable oils or animal oils and fats; esters of glycol and glycerol with lauric, myristic, palmitic, stearic, montanic, oleic and linoleic acids; and olive kernel, sesame, cottonseed, lard and sperm oils. Additive (b) may be, for example, methyl, ethyl and butyl acetate and esters of formic, propionic and butyric acids; esters containing hydroxy groups are also referred to. Corrosion inhibitors referred to are amines, mercaptans, heterocyclic nitrogen compounds, substituted ureas and thioureas and metal phenyl fatty acid salts of formula [C6H5(CH2)17-COO]2M where M is Ca, Ba, Sr or Zn, for example a phenyl stearate.
