Abstract
749,314. Butterfly valves. JOHNSON & PHILLIPS, Ltd., and FRANKLIN, A. C. June 4, 1954 [June 10, 1953], No. 15986/53. Class 135. A valve for controlling the flow of liquid through a conduit 7 comprises a vane 20 mounted in a longitudinal slot 19 through a spindle 18 extending across the conduit, the ends of the slot being cut square so that in the closed position of the vane, the ends of the slot are in the nature of chords to the periphery of the conduit. The edge of the vane is formed with opposite flats 20a which fit the ends of the slot, as shown in Fig. 6. The vane 20 is secured to the spindle 18 by nuts and bolts 23, 22. One end of the spindle 18 enters a blind recess in the conduit 7 and the other passes to the outside of the conduit through a packing 26 compressed by a tubular plug 28 acting through a sleeve 27. The marginal portion of the vane narrows towards the edge in streamline fashion say from quarter of an inch to <SP>1</SP>/ 32 inch. The bore of the conduit is uniformly cylindrical only over a narrow region of, say, # inch adjacent the edge of the vane in its closed position. On either side of the cylindrical region the bore expands conically at a small angle of, say, half a degree to the axis of the bore. The outer end of the spindle 18 is of D-section to facilitate its rotation by a removable handle 24, Fig. 9, having a complementary D-shaped hole in one end. Rotation of the spindle 18 beyond the open and closed positions of the valve is prevented by an indicator plate 34 secured to the spindle and having straight edges 35, 37, adapted to bear in turn against a face 36 rigid with a flange 10 on the conduit 7. The spindle 18 may be locked in the open or closed position by a locking strip 31 secured to a thickened portion 25 of the conduit 7 by a screw 32 and having a D-shaped hole in its horizontal part. Two locking strips with differently orientated holes are required to lock the valve in the open and closed positions. The valve is shown in Fig. 9 mounted between the wall 3 of a tank containing an oil cooled transformer and a radiator 4. Bolts 11 surrounding a port in the wall 3 pass through the flange 10 on the conduit 7 and also through a flange 6 on the radiator. The flange 10 is forced against a gasket 8 between it and the wall 3 by nuts 14 locked by nuts 15 and the flange 6 is in turn forced against a gasket 9 between it and the conduit 7 by nuts 16 locked by nuts 17.
