[Also in Group XXX] In equipment for measuring and recording the vertical irregularities along a railway track rail, a vehicle frame, Fig. 2, is mounted at one end on an axle 1 fixed thereto and rests by a ball-andsocket joint 6 on a bogie 5 having one fixed axle 4 and an axle 3 pivoted thereto as at 7, Fig. 3, to rotate in a vertical plane transverse to the track, the relative vertical movements between the axle box 8 of the axle 3 and the frame 2 due to the passing of the axle 3 over an irregularity being transmitted directly by means of the sheath 12 enclosing the cable 20 for stylus 14. The relative movements between the axle box 16 of axle 4 and the frame are transmitted to the cable 20 and stylus 14 through a reduction gear 18 to compensate for a component of the relative movement between the axle box 8 and frame 2 due to a consequential vertical movement of the frame 2 relative to the rail during passing of the axle 3 over the irregularity. Action of cable 9 on the end 11 of the sheath 12 in opposition to spring 15 varies the curvature of the sheath secured at its other end to the recording table 13, thereby tightening or slackening the cable 20 in opposition to spring 22 to move the stylus 14 accordingly. Cable 19 from the reduction gearing 18 acts directly on the cable 20 in opposition to spring 21. The cables 9 and 17 are connected to the respective axle boxes by rollers guided in arcuate slots 24 centred on the joint 6, Fig. 3. Specifications 748,984 and 748,987, [Group XXX], are referred to.
