Abstract

An oil-soluble copolymer comprises monomer units of (A) a compound having an ethylenic linkage and a group of from 4 to 30 aliphatic carbon atoms, and (B) a nitrogenous derivative of an unsaturated dicarboxylic acid wherein at least one carbonyl carbon atom is linked as an amide or amine salt to a nitrogen atom which is attached to an organic radical substituted by at least one hydroxy, nitro, mercapto or amino group, said units being in the ratio of 1 to 15 of (A) to 1 of (B). The nitrogenous monomer (A) is preferably derived from acids such as maleic, fumaric and citraconic and a list of derivatives is given, e.g. maleamides, maleamates, substituted maleamic acids and salts of maleic acid. Lists of suitable monomers (B) include olefins, ethers and esters but preferably an alkyl ester of an olefinic mono- or di-carboxylic acid is used. The copolymers may be prepared by copolymerization of suitable components or alternatively the essential groups specified under (A) and (B) may be introduced by after-treatment, e.g. by esterification of acidic groups in a copolymer with lauryl alcohol, ethyl hexanol or pentaerythritol, and/or by treatment of an acidic copolymer with ethanolamine or diethanolamine to give an amide, or with dihydroxy ethylene diamine or N-(2,3-dihydroxypropyl) aniline to give an amine salt. In addition any remaining carboxyl groups may be converted to cyano, ester or amido, e.g. by reaction with polyhydric alcohols. Copolymers containing 3 or more different monomer units may be obtained. Polymerization may be effected in bulk, emulsion or solution and monomer (see example 8), catalyst and solvent may be added incrementally. Solvents disclosed are benzene, toluene, xylene and petroleum naphtha and the catalyst may be benzoyl, acetyl, di-t.-butyl, di-t.-amyl or dibenzoyl peroxide; t.-butyl hydroperoxide; a ,a 1-azodiisobutyronitrile or 1,11-azodicyclohexanecarbonitrile. The products exhibit detergent and antiwear properties in combination with a variety of specified natural or synthetic oils which may also contain the usual lubricant additives (see Group III).ALSO:Lubricating oil compositions contain a copolymer comprising monomer units of (A) a compound having an ethylenic linkage and a group of from 4 to 30 aliphatic carbon atoms, and (B) a nitrogenous derivative of an unsaturated dicarboxylic acid wherein at least one carbonyl carbon atom is linked as an amide or amine salt to a nitrogen atom which is attached to an organic radical substituted by at least one hydroxy, nitro, mercapto or amino group, said units being in the ratio of 1 to 15 of (A) to 1 of (B) (see Group IV(a). Oils specified are refined paraffin or naphthenic base oils, alkylated waxes or other hydrocarbons, hydrogenated hydrocarbon polymers, condensation products of chlorinated alkyl hydrocarbons with aryl compounds, propylene or ethylene oxide polymers and esters thereof, di (2-ethylhexyl) sebacate, tricresyl phosphate and silicate esters. Other lubricant additives may also be present.
