Abstract

An electrophotographically sensitive member is formed by converting the scrupulously clean surface of an aluminium base member by heat treatment in air to a uniform layer of substantially non-porous, amorphous aluminium oxide and depositing thereon a photoconductive insulating layer e.g. of vitreous selenium, sulphur, a mixture of sulphur and selenium, or anthracene. The aluminium base may be cleaned by immersion in a nitric-hydrofluoric, or nitric-phosphoric acid mixture and then oxidised by heating in air at 450 DEG C.; selenium may then be applied thereon by vacuum deposition, the plate being maintained at 60-75 DEG C.
