Abstract

748,282. Optical tonometers. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. July 26, 1954 [April 24, 1953], No. 11436/53. Class 81(2). In a device for measuring the internal pressure of the eyeball, the body of the instrument extends around the plunger and bears on the cornea over a relatively large area. The body of the instrument 1 encloses a pressure sensitive element 31 which is connected to an external recording device and is actuated by the plunger rod 12. This plunger is in two sections see Fig. 6 (not shown), one bearing against the other with the junction in the same plane as a gimbal mounting 21 carrying an outer cylinder 9 so as to allow relatively free movement to the end of the plunger 12. The end of the cylinder 9 carries a cup 10 by means of which the appliance bears on the eyeball, suitable pressure being applied by a spring set on a pivot between the casing 1 and a bracket 4, which is connected, by adjusting means not shown, to a head band. The outer part of the gimbal 21 is mounted on a cylinder 20 which can slide axially in a guide 18 on the casing 1 and is adjusted in this direction by a cam 43 rotated through a cord 39 by a knob 7. This adjustment varies the position of the cup 10 relative to the end of the plunger. rod 12, and so varies the actual pressure exerted by the latter on the eyeball.
