[Also in Group XXXI] A method of making stem lugs for cycle and motor-cycle handle-bars from prefabricated metal parts forming, as one part, a jaw clip and a tubular spigot from an elliptical sheet metal blank and forming, as the other part, a tubular socket and a tubular cap lug from an elliptical sheet metal blank, assembling the parts so that the spigot enters the socket, and uniting the parts by welding or brazing the spigot in the socket. The jaw clip and spigot 1, 3, Fig. 1, are made as described with reference to Figs. 3-8 of the parent Specification, i.e. by pressing the spigot from an elliptical blank and clipping, piercing and bending the elliptical flange, except that the spigot 3 is squared to oblong section with its major dimension parallel to the major axis of the elliptical flange and a part-cylindrical strengthening liner 4 is welded or brazed in the jaw clip 1. The socket and cap part is formed by drawing an elliptical blank to form a tubular boss 6, Fig. 3, surrounded by an elliptical flange 7, squaring the boss to oblong section 9, Fig. 5, pressing the flange 7 to a shape 12, cropping the blind end of the boss 9 to give an open socket 11, Fig. 7, arcuate-edged at 13, and bending the flange 12 first into U-shape and then closed to form a cylindrical cap lug which is welded or brazed along the seam 14, Fig. 10. An end cap 15 is then welded or brazed on to the part so formed which is welded or brazed on to a handle-bar stem tube 16. The spigot 3 is then fitted into the socket 11 and welded or brazed thereto. In a modification, Fig. 11, the spigot 3 and socket 11 are of circular cross-section and the end of the socket is gapped to form lips 18. Such lips may be formed on the rectangularsectioned socket. The completed stem lug may be chromium-plated.
