Abstract

747,599. Feeding webs. MOUNT HOPE MACHINERY CO. Aug. 4, 1954 [Sept. 30, 1953], No. 22643/54. Class 100 (1). Apparatus for straightening the weft in woven fabrics comprises parallel spaced elements adapted to guide portions of a woven web under longitudinal tension, a skew-correcting. unit transversely engaging a portion of the web, and a tilter for increasing the length of travel path between the spaced elements of one edge of the web relative to the length of travel path between the elements of the opposite edge of the web while maintaining the tension at that opposite edge uniform before and after tilting. The apparatus comprises four fixed axis rollers 10, 12, 14, 16 mounted in a frame 18 with their axes in parallelism and three tiltable rollers 20, 22, 24 rotatably supported with their axes in paiallelism by two rigid bars 26, 28. The bars 26, 28 are supported one on each of two horizontal shafts 30, 32 by means of vertical rods 40 rotatably mounted on and with their axes parallel to the bars 26, 28, and which are attached to the shafts 30, 32, the latter being slidably mounted on the frame 18. The web 36 is passed over the rollers in the manner shown in Fig. 1. Pivotally secured to the ends of the shafts 30, 32 is a fulcrum bar 52 adapted to seat against fulcrum pins 58, 60 which may be adjusted to correspond to the width of the web 36 by means of a handle 70 which operates a screw 64 on which the pins 58, 60 are mounted. In operation, should, for example, the righthand side of the web 36 as viewed in Fig. 4 be leading the left-hand side the shaft 32 is moved to the dotted line position shown, the fulcrum bar 52 pivoting about the pin 58 thereby causing the tilting rollers to turn about the axis A so as to correct the skew in the fabric, the tension at the left-hand side of the web remaining substantially constant. The shafts 30, 32 are operated by an electric motor 72 which may be manually or automatically controlled and which drives through suitable gearing a shaft 86 the outer portions 86a and 86b of which are connected through universal joints to the motordriven parts of the shaft. The shaft part 86a is mounted in a bearing 92 above the shaft 30 and carries a sprocket wheel 94 over which passes a chain 100 carrying a block 108 which co-operates with a collar 110 on the shaft 30. The shaft 86b is mounted in a similar bearing to the shaft 32 and operates a similar chain arrangement also below the shaft 32 so that the shafts 30, 32 are allowed to move in opposite directions when the shaft 86 is rotated.
