Abstract

[Also in Group XXVIII] A method of manufacturing a tube comprises helically-winding a plurality of layers of strip metal, e.g. heat-treated aluminium alloy or steel alloy, about a mandrel, the abutting edges of the metal in at least one layer being so displaced with reference to the abutting edges of the metal in a preceding layer as to ensure no right-line path from the inside to the outside, of the tube between abutting edges of the layers, bonding the assembly together by means of bonding material separating one layer from the next, and then removing the mandrel. The bonding material, e.g. soft solder or a synthetic resin, may be applied either before helically winding the strip on the mandrel or during winding. When the metal is not unduly affected by heat the bonding may be effected by low-temperature brazing. The helix angle may be the same for each layer of strip and alternate layers may be of opposite sense. Alternatively, several layers may be wound upon each other in the same sense with their abutting edges displaced and then an equal number of layers may be wound upon these layers but in the opposite sense and also with their abutting edges displaced. To improve the wetting of the strip by the adhesive it is shot blasted on both sides and degreased prior to winding.
