Abstract

The melting time of a charge of ferrous metal or alloy thereof, in a metallurgical furnace, is reduced by directing at the charge a flame and a stream of oxygen and a stream of powdered metallic material which at the melting temperature of the charge undergoes an exothermic reaction. These streams are maintained till the charge has melted substantially level when the streams of metallic material and oxygen are terminated, heating of the charge by the flame being continued till the charge is refined. The metallic material used may be Fe or Si or a mixture of these two or a p mixture of Fe, Ca, Mn, and Si with or without Al.
