A deflecting tongue movable to and from a projected position in which it intercepts and deflects articles on a conveyer belt from the belt is automatically returned to non-projected position by the actuation of stationary electric contacts by the article being deflected, which produces two circuit changes at the beginning and end, respectively, of the actuation, these changes together resulting in the return of the tongue. As shown, tickets 7 are conveyed on edge along a vertically slotted guide 1 by a belt 2. The tickets travel past a number of deflecting tongues 3 which can be selectively operated to pivot into the path of the tickets to divert them to corresponding delivery stations. Each tongue is actuated by an electromagnet 10 whose armature 12 moves through a lever 9 a metal roller 6 having a rubber ring 5, which is in engagement with tongue 3 through leaf springs 4, 8 on the latter. At the same time an enlargement 11 of the roller presses against the edge of the belt causing the latter to drive the roller such that as a ticket is diverted from the belt by the tongue it is gripped between the rubber ring 5 and leaf spring 4 so that the rotation of the roller pulls the ticket along the tongue from the belt. Leaf spring 8 and the metal body of the roller form an electric contact which is broken by passage of the ticket therebetween. This is arranged to break the circuit of a primary relay in the control circuit of electromagnet 10 but maintain a circuit through a first winding of a second relay which holds in the electromagnet until the contact is re-established, whereupon a current flows through a second winding of the second relay to neutralize the effect of the first winding and thereby break the circuit of the electromagnet 10. The tongues 3 may be mounted in guide 1 by a leaf spring instead of pivotally as shown.
