Abstract

746,623. Automatic steering control systems. OVSHINSKY, S. R. Feb. 12, 1954, No. 4231/54. Class 38 (4). In a system for automatically controlling a tractor to travel back and forth across a field and advance in the direction of the length of the field, the tractor is started off across the field at one end and is maintained on a straight course by a contact-making gyroscope controlling a reversible electric motor operating the steering wheel. As the tractor moves, a wheel riding upon the surface of the field drives, as shown in Fig. 3, through a chain 23, shaft 29, electromagnetic clutch 31 and gearing 32, a drum 41 carrying conducting strips 54, 55 arranged so that the space between them has a shape corresponding to that of the field. A normally stationary contact 50, which is initially at the right-hand end of drum 41 makes contact with strip 55 when the tractor has crossed the field. This causes, through a system of relays, Fig. 8 (not shown), operation of the steering motor to a limiting position to turn the tractor to the right. A delayed relay maintains this condition for a period sufficient for the tractor to turn through 180 degrees. During this time drum 41 is declutched and a motor 69 is operated to move contact 50 by a screw 52 to a position corresponding to the new position of the tractor along the length of the field. When the delayed relay operates, the steering motor again comes under gyro control so that the tractor moves back in a straight line across the field, electromagnetic clutch 33 being engaged under these conditions to cause reverse operation of drum 41 through gearing 34. Engagement of strip 54 by contact 50 then causes a left turn of the tractor in a manner similar to that of the right turn. The field is thus repeatedly traversed until, when it has been completely covered and the last turn has been made, contact 50 has been moved to the left hand end of drum 41 causing operation of a switch 80 to stop the tractor. The tractor engine or a continuously operating motor may be arranged to control the steering instead of the reversible motor.
