Abstract

<PICT:0746609/III/1> For reducing the concentration of electrolytes in a solution a cell is used divided by membranes 5-8 into at least four compartments 1-4 arranged in a closed circuit, alternate membranes being capable of transmitting cations only (5, 7) and anions only (6, 8) respectively. Suitable materials are ion exchange resins moulded with a plastic into coherent sheets. Compartment 4 contains the solution under treatment, e.g. sea water and 2 and 3 may also initially contain it, while 1 contains a solution of greater ionic activity, e.g. sea water with added common salt. Consequently cations and anions migrate from 1 to 2 and 3 respectively causing these compartments to become positively and negatively charged, whereupon ions of opposite nature migrate from 4 to restore equilibrium in these compartments. By employing a circuit of 8 compartments a two stage reduction of concentration may be similarly effected.
