746,340. Measuring viscosity. NAAMLOOZE VENNOOTSCHAP DE BATAAFSCHE PETROLEUM MAATSCHAPPIJ. June 4, 1954 [June 8, 1953], No. 16548/54. Class 106 (2). A device for indicating viscosity of a liquid by means of a capillary tube 7, a volumetric pump for pumping the liquid through the tube, and a pressure gauge for measuring the difference in pressure between two points in the tube, is characterized in that to obtain continuous readings of the viscosity of e.g. a heated liquid fuel flowing through a conduit, the tube 7 is located within the conduit 3, 1, 2 and the pump withdraws part of the liquid from the conduit to be forced through the capillary and back into the conduit while the rest of the liquid is conducted round the tube. As shown, the pump is also located within the conduit and comprises gears 9, 11 driven by a shaft 10, its pressure opening being connected at 13 to the capillary and at 14 to a duct 17 leading to the gauge. An overflow valve 15 discharging at 16 into the conduit may be provided. The pressure gauge may be provided with a scale on which it is possible to read off directly the number of degrees by which the temperature of the liquid must be raised to cause its viscosity to fall to a desired maximum.
