Abstract
746,315. Seats convertible into beds. LEVY, A. March 16, 1954, No. 7627/54. Class 52(2). A seat convertible into a bed of the kind having a back which can be lowered and parts to serve as extensions, has a back, pivoted to a movable seat member and having a gudgeon at each side to engage in a guide or channel in the frame of an arm to maintain the back in raised position. When in the seating position, the seat member covers a second extension member. As shown in Figs. 1 and 4, the back 7 has at each side a gudgeon 9 sliding in a channel 10 formed partly in the uprights 11 of arms 1, and extending on the slope in the tiebeams 4 of the arms. A seat supporting member 6 is hinged to the back 7 and is guided along slideways 5 in the tiebeams 4 an extension 12 terminated by a valance 13, slides beneath the member 6. A returning device comprising a strap 14 is fixed at one end 15 to a crosspiece 2 of the frame and at the other end 16 to the frame of extension 12, having passed over a guide 17 fixed to the member 6. Thus, if the back is in the horizontal position and hence the seat is acting as a bed, the return to a chair is achieved by pressing the valance in the direction of arrow 18. A two part mattress 20, 21, having a hinge 22 is attached to the tie. beam 4 by a flexible connection 23c. Thus on the lowering of the back 7, continuity is ensured between the mattress 20, 21 and a mattress 19 fixed to the back. A sloping bolster 23 can be inserted to give a backward inclination to the seat. In a modification, Fig. 7, the back 26<SP>11</SP> has gudgeons 27 engaging in short guides or notches 28 of the arms 29. The base of the back is hinged to the horizontal seat members 31 mounted on frame members 32 by hinges which can move slightly forward and backward. An extension 34 slides into frame members 32. To lower the back, it is raised a little first to disengage the gudgeons from the notches and then lowered for support on arms 35 which can be removable, or pivoted and housed in the back. Mattresses are disposed as in the first example. A stop device consisting of a belt 36 prevents the back being raised further than is necessary. The framework is filled with straps, lattices or the like. In a further modification, Fig. 9, a groove 37 with notches 38 is provided for for gudgeons 39 fixed to the side of the back 40. The seat member 41 is hinged to the back 40 and moves in slides 43 in the framework. An extension 44 slides into member 41. A flexible member, fixed to the back crosspiece 47 and crosspeice 48 of the extensions 44 passes around a pulley 49 mounted on the front crosspiece of member 41. Thus depression of the back 40 to the horizontal extends 41 and 44 and pressure in the direction of the arrow 52 sets up the seat again. More than one returning device may be used. The frontal crosspiece 53 is slightly smaller than the distance between the arms.
