Abstract

A composition for shrink-proofing wool comprises (1) from 25 to 95 per cent by weight of a benzene-soluble diorganosiloxane having a viscosity of at least 106 c.s. at 25 DEG C. in which the organic radicals are selected from alkyl or alkenyl radicals of less than 6 carbon atoms and phenyl radicals, at least 50 per cent of the total number of radicals being the defined aliphatic radicals and (2) from 5 to 75 per cent by weight of a benzene-soluble siloxane of the general formula <FORM:0746307/IV(a)/1> where R1 is alkyl, alkenyl or phenyl, n has an average value from 1 to 1.9, m has an average value from 0.1 to 1 and the sum (m + n) has a value from 1.65 to 2.1, and thereafter the fabric is heated at a temperature from 100 DEG to 300 DEG F. to set the polysiloxane. The compound of (1) may be dimethylsiloxane, diethylsiloxane, ethylmethylsiloxane, methylbutylsiloxane, methylpropylsiloxane, vinylmethylsiloxane, allylethylsiloxane, phenylmethylsiloxane, phenylethylsiloxane or copolymers of these compounds and may contain copolymerized diphenylsiloxane. The siloxane of (2) may be methylhydrogensiloxane, ethylhydrogensiloxane, vinylhydrogensiloxane, allylhydrogensiloxane, stearylhydrogensiloxane, phenylhydrogensiloxane and copolymers of methylhydrogensiloxane with trimethylsiloxane or tripropylsiloxane, copolymers of HSiO1.5 with dimethylsiloxane, dihexylsiloxane, vinylmethylsiloxane, phenylmethylsiloxane and stearylmethylsiloxane, copolymers of methylhydrogensiloxane, dimethylsiloxane, monomethylsiloxane and monostearylsiloxane a copolymer of vinylhydrogensiloxane, phenylhydrogensiloxane and monostearysiloxane and copolymers of butylhydrogensiloxane, HSiO1.5, triethylsiloxane and vinylphenylsiloxane. The compounds may be mixed in solution in a mutual solvent, e.g. benzene, toluene, xylene or a petroleum hydrocarbon and may be applied to the fabric in solution or aqueous emulsion by dipping or spraying. The composition may include as catalyst lead 2-ethylhexoate, lead naphthenate, 2-ethylhexoic acid, trimethybenzlylammoniumchloride, tri-methyl - 2 - hydroxy ethylammonium bi-carbonate or trimethyl-2-hydroxyethylammonium-2-ethylhexoate. Specification 680,265 is referred to.ALSO:Wool fabrics are treated with a composition comprising (1) from 25 to 95 per cent by weight of a benzene-soluble diorganosiloxane having a viscosity of at least 106 c.s. at 25 DEG C. in which the organic radicals are selected from alkyl or alkylene radicals of less than 6 carbon atoms and phenyl radicals, at least 50 per cent of the total number of radicals being the defined aliphatic radicals, and (2) from 5 to 75 per cent by weight of a benzene-soluble siloxane of the general formula <FORM:0746307/IV(c)/1> where R1 is alkyl, alkenyl or phenyl, n has an average value from 1 to 1.9, m has an average value from 0.1 to 1 and the sum (m+n) has a value from 1.65 to 2.1, and thereafter the fabric is heated at a temperature from 100 to 300 DEG F. to set the polysiloxane. The term "wool fabric" includes sheep wool fabrics and fabrics of mohair, cashmere, camel hair, alpaca wool, vicuna wool, llama wool, cow hair and horse hair and of animal hair fibres mixed with cotton, polyacrylonitrile, polyterephthalate, or polyamide fibres or rayon. The siloxane of (2) may be methylhydrogensiloxane, ethylhydrogensiloxane, vinylhydrogensiloxane, allylhydrogensiloxane, stearylhydrogensiloxane, phenylhydrogensiloxane and copolymers of methylhydrogensiloxane with trimethylsiloxane or tripropylsiloxane, copolymers of HSiO1.5 with dimethylsiloxane, dihexylsiloxane, vinylmethylsiloxane, phenylmethylsiloxane and stearylmethylsiloxane, copolymers of methylhydrogensiloxane, dimethylsiloxane, monomethylsiloxane and monostearylsiloxane a copolymer of vinylhydrogensiloxane, phenylhydrogensiloxane and monostearylsiloxane and copolymers of butyhydrogensiloxane, HSiO1.5, triethylsiloxane and vinylphenylsiloxane. The compounds may be mixed in solution in a mutual solvent, e.g. benzene, toluene, xylene or a petroleum hydrocarbon, and may be applied to the fabric in solution or aqueous emulsion by dipping or spraying. The composition may include as catalyst lead 2-ethylhexoate, lead naphthenate, 2-ethylhexoic acid, trimethylbenzylammoniumchloride, trimethyl-2-hydroxy ethylammonium bicarbonate or trimethyl-2-hydroxyethylammonium - 2 - ethylhexoate. Specification 680,265, [Group IV(a)], is referred to.
