[Also in Group XXXVII] In a garbage disposal apparatus associated with a kitchen sink and having a garbage and water receiving chamber 10, 11 with a motor-driven comminut- or 21 therein, the motor 19, which is reversible, is included in an electric circuit having a reversing switch 34 adapted to cause the motor to run in opposite directions during successive periods of operation and switching means 27 responsive to adequate flow conditions within the chamber to close the electric circuit. The reversing switch includes pairs of fixed contact arms 35, 36 with co-operative movable contact arms 37, 38 operating between the respective pairs of contact arms and successively moved in reverse directions by means of an oscillatable actuator 47 which is successively rocked in reverse directions upon energisation and de-energisation of a solenoid 42 controlled by the switching means 27, The switching means 27 comprises a flap valve 22 mounted fast on a shaft 23 journalled through the upper wall of a drain extension 13, the shaft 23 having fast thereon a knurled operating knob 24 having an integral sleeve 24<SP>1</SP> which functions as a cam and has a flattened surface 25 thereon. Riding on the cam sleeve 24<SP>1</SP> is the free end portion of a yieldable switch contact arm 26 anchored to the bottom of a switch box 27. When the apparatus is inoperative, or when there is an insufficient head of water reacting against the valve 22, the valve is in the position shown in Fig. 1 preventing material passage through the drain 13, 14, and the switch arm 26 is separated from a contact element 28 depending from the switch box 27. When there is a sufficient head of fluid reacting against the valve 22, the pressure causes the valve to swing towards its open position, Fig. 3, This swinging movement turns the shaft 23 and cam sleeve 24<SP>1</SP> to cause a raised portion of the cam sleeve to move the contact arm 26 into engagement with the contact element 28 and close the circuit through the switch mechanism 27. The switch box 27 can be moved pivotally, by means of a laterally projecting rod 54, into the dotted line position, Fig. 3, to dissociate it from the valve 22 so as to permit flow of fluid without operation of the comminutor 21. The switch box may also be moved to the dotted line position when refuse is jammed against the valve plate 22, the switch box being turned down manually to its operative position or manipulated to close the contact arm 26 to cause operation of the motor 19 so as to clear the jammed refuse.
