Abstract
745,910. Glass-metal seals; fusibic cut-outs. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., BREADNER, R. L., NEILL, T. R., and SIMMS, C. H. Nov. 17, 1953 [Nov. 24, 1952], No. 29720/52. Classes 36 and 38 (1). [Also in Groups XI and XL (a)] A method of manufacturing electrical devices, such as discharge devices, voltage break-down devices, T-R cells, resistors, incandescent lamps and fuses, having a sealed envelope whose interior is filled with gas to a required pressure, in which the envelope is constructed in the form of a number of alternate glass and metal parts which are loosely assembled within an enclosure with each metal part abutting against each adjacent glass part, the enclosure is gas-filled to a suitable pressure, and each metal part is heated by an eddy current so as to soften each adjacent glass part and seal itself thereto hermetically, the suitable pressure of gas being such that the gas trapped within the envelope by the sealing constitutes a filling at the required pressure when the device has cooled down to room temperature. The method can be applied by the apparatus shown in Fig. 4 comprising two hard glass parts 12 and 13 fitted together in vacuum-tight manner by ground and greased flanges 14 and 15 and containing the loosely-assembled electrical devices 1 supported on a ceramic platform 20 supported by tungsten wires 16, 17. The apparatus has a stem 21 communicating with a vacuum pump or a source of filling gas (argon and nitrogen are referred to) and is surrounded by an eddy current heating coil 22 at the level of the platform 20. The apparatus is exhausted to a pressure of less than 10-<SP>4</SP> mms. of mercury before being filled with the requisite gas, and the coil 22 is then operated. The devices can be degassed before sealing by a baking treatment for the apparatus whilst evacuated. Fig. 3 shows a fuse comprising a glass tube 8 closed at each end by a metal cap 9, 10 and containing a wire filament 11 welded or otherwise attached at each end to one of the end caps, and filled with nitrogen. Specification 715,685, [Group XL (a)], is referred to.
