745,755. Arc-rupturing in switches. FERGUSON PAILIN, Ltd. June 25, 1954 [July 23, 1953]; No. 20521/53. Class 38(5) In an arc-chute, for an air-break interrupter, of the type in which the root of the arc moves along an inclined runner to a quenching device, the runner, or each of two diverging runners 1, 2, comprises an elongated conductive member which is narrower, at least over the inclined portion, than the space between the side walls of the chute and is supported, as by pins 9, 10, extending from side wall 5, so as to cause a minimum obstruction to air flow from the rear of the runner through the space between the runner and the side walls and a cooling device 19, comprising a number of plates of good head conductivity, is arranged at the rear of each runner to cool and de-ionize any gases forced to the rear of the runner. A fixed contact assembly 6 is supported adjacent to and below the lower end of runner 1 by a mounting structure 7 which has a minimum cross-sectional area in the horizontal plane. The runner 2 is arranged so that when an arc is drawn between the fixed and moving contact assemblies 6, 11, the root of the are at the latter will transfer to the runner 2. The assembly 11 may comprise main and arcing contacts 12, 13 which co-operate with main and arcing contact portions on assembly 6, and may also include an arctransferring portion 16. The arc-quenching device 17 comprises a number of spaced, preferably metallic plates 18.
