Abstract

745,352. Generating combustion products under pressure. KEAST, F. H. July 2, 1952 [Feb. 21, 1952], No. 16702/52. Class 51 (1). In a gas turbine engine, an annular combustion chamber, through which a stream of fluid is constrained to flow, comprises an annular inner casing, an annular outer casing, and an annular flame tube supported between the casings coaxially with the casings and spaced from them, the flame tube being divided longtitudinally into a plurality of detachable elements. In the arrangement shown in Figs. 2 and 3 an annular outer casing 17 and an annular inner casing 18 are mounted coaxially, to define an annular combustion chamber containing a flame tube 20. The flame tube comprises two halves each formed with a semi-cylindrical inner wall 22 and a semi-cylindrical outer wall 23 and bounded by longitudinal partitions 24 which converge at their down-stream ends. The two semi-cylindrical outer walls 23 are provided with flanges 27, Fig. 3, which are bolted together by bolts 29; the inner walls 22 are provided with flanges 27<SP>1</SP> which butt together. The down-stream end of the flame tube is supported and restrained from radial movement on two stiffening flanges 43, 47 provided on the stator of the turbine; beading 49 is provided on the inner and outer surfaces of the walls of the flame tube to allow limited relative longitudinal movement. At its upstream end the flame tube is held by suspension tubes 50 symmetrically spaced around the outer casing 17 and by T-shaped flanges 53 attached to the inner casing 18 and L-shaped flanges 54 on the adjacent inner wall of the flame tube. The outer casing 17 may be slidable over the compressor or the turbine assembly to allow access to the flame tube. An alternative construction for the flame tube and its support is shown in Fig. 6. The two halves of the flame tube 21a, 21b are arranged so that one half slides within the other and the two are then bolted together by bolts 60. The flame tube is secured to the outer casing 17<SP>1</SP> by H-section blocks 63 bolted to the flame -tube and outer casing at joints where there is no bolt 60 protruding.
