Class 80(3) [Also in Group XXIX] A telescopic strut is provided with means for locking the strut in its extended condition. The strut comprises an inner tubular component 14 having a bearing 17 sliding within the bore of a component 10. A locking sleeve 22 is provided in the component 10 and together with a retaining ring 23 defines a groove which is engaged by the heads 32 of locking tongues 33 when the strut is extended. The tongues 33 are spread outwardly by a plunger 38 disposed within the component 14 and slidably mounted on a piston 41 which is fixed relative to the outer component 10. When the strut is nearly fully extended, liquid is supplied through a connection 48 and a tube 46 to a chamber 44 to extend the plunger 38 until a step 55 abuts the heads 32 of the locking tongues which are retained inwardly by the sleeve 22. The plunger thus acts through the locking tongues upon the inner component 14 to assist the extension of the strut. When the heads 32 have traversed the inner surface of the sleeve they spread outwardly into the groove and are retained there by a full diameter surface 39 of the plunger. The strut is unlocked by connecting chamber 44 to exhaust, the liquid permanently supplied through a connection 53 and a passage 51 to the rear of the piston 41 retracting the plunger. The strut is extended and retracted by a hydraulic jack.
