Abstract
743,765. Dynamo-electric machines. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC INTERNATIONAL CO. Dec. 4, 1953 [Dec. 6, 1952], No. 33735/53. Class 35. (Also in Groups XIII and XXXVII] A polyphase dynamo-electric machine is thermally protected by a thermally responsive device 7 comprising tube means containing a liquid, e.g. water or propyl alcohol, which vaporizes to actuate machine de-energizing contacts 11 at the maximum safe temperature of the machine, the tube means being disposed in close thermal relation to the windings of all the phases of the machine so as to be heated thereby and individual parts of the tube means being individually and additionally heated by the currents in the respective phases of the machine. As shown, the tube 7 is in direct thermal contact with the stator windings 3 and with a bearing at 22 of an induction motor to provide protection against overheating during running, whilst the phase currents of the windings 23... 25 pass through the tube 7 to protect against, e.g., locked rotor conditions. The tube is closed at one end and at the other end communicates with an expandable bellows or capsule device 10 which when the liquid vaporizes operates the contacts 11 connected in the maintaining circuit of a contactor 27 connected in the supply lines 26 to the motor. The tube is of electrically conductive material and while its bore is continuous the tube itself is interrupted by electrical insulators 13, 14 of e.g. glass and by connectors 15 ... 19 to 15, 17, 18 of which are connected the ends of the windings 23 ... 25, and connectors 16, 19 are interconnected by a member 20 whereby the latter connector forms the winding star point. Arrangements for delta connected and for dual voltage windings are also described. Instead of being connected in the winding circuits the tube parts may be heated by heater wires disposed around or within the tube and connected in said circuits.
