Abstract

743,577. Photo-electric indicating systems. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. April 1, 1953 [April 9, 1952], No. 9091/52. Class 40 (3). [Also in Group XX] To record the deflections of an optical beam, the beam is passed through a scanning device 4 to a photo-electric cell 8 at a time position in a recurring cycle corresponding to the deflection, the pulses produced by the cell 8 causing an electrical tracing device 6 moving in synchronism with the scanning device to intermittently trace on a recording medium 11. A beam from a light source 1 is reflected by a movable mirror 2 through a lens 3 on to a photo-electric cell 8, and is intercepted by a rotating disc 4 having slots 7 one of which is always traversing the length of the cell 8. The pulses from the cell 8 are amplified and passed to a fixed electrode 10 and to electrodes 6 mounted on a disc driven at the same speed as the disc 4. The electrodes 6, 10 correspond in shape and position to the slots 7 and the photo-electric cell 8 so that when the beam passes through a slot 7, the resulting pulse causes a spark to pass between an electrode 6 and the electrode 10 which spark marks a sheet of recording paper, such as is described in Specification 718,115, [Group XIX], continuously moving between the electrodes 6 and 10. In a modification the scanning device is a cylinder surrounding the photo-electric cell 8 and having a spiral slot, and the tracing device is constituted by a spiral electrode on the cylinder co-operating with the fixed strip electrode. In a further modification, in order to avoid using a long narrow photo-electric cell, the beam after passing the scanning disc 4 enters a transparent plastic block 15 having an outer elliptical surface 14 metallized. The mirror 2 and cell 16 are located at the foci of the ellipse, so that a small cell can be used. The surface of the block 15 facing the mirror 2 is cylindrical so that the light beam enters the block normal to the surface and refraction is prevented.
