Abstract

743,296. Cutting machines. CHAMBON, Ltd. Dec. 1, 1954 [Sept. 2, 1953], No. 24317/53. Class 31 (1). [Also in Group XVI] In a cutting machine, e.g. for cutting-out' carton blanks, of the kind in which sheet material is pressed against a forme 14 by means of a rocking impression table 2 having a substantially cylindrical surface 3 which rolls over the face of the forme, the impression table is pivotally mounted, at a point 5 which lies between the surface 3 and the axis of curvature of that surface, on a lever 6 fixed to a shaft 7 which is rocked to cause the impression surface to roll over the face of the forme 14. The sides of the table 2 carry rollers 9, 10 adapted to run against guide members 11, 12 shaped to follow the paths of the rollers during the rolling motion of the table. The forme 14 is mounted on a bed 1 which is moved into and out of operative position by means of toggle levers arranged in pairs 15, 19 and 16, 20 on each side which are loaded by springs 28, 31, to urge the bed down into the operative position. In this position the toggle levers are aligned so as to resist the pressure exerted by the impression table. The lever 20 on spindle 22 and a corresponding lever on the other side of spindle 21 carry rollers 23 which co-operate with cams 24 on a shaft 25 to deflect the toggle levers and raise the forme bed as shown. Rubber buffers 34, Fig. 2, are provided mounted on brackets 35 attached to the main frame 13 for compressive engagement by flange members 33 on the bed as it comes into the operative position. This ensures that any slack in the toggle levers will be taken up before the pressure is applied by the impression table. The shaft 25 is driven from a main drive shaft through worm and spur gearing. A crank on shaft 25 is connected to an arm on shaft 7 so that as shaft 25 rotates shaft 7 is rocked. The arrangement is such that the forme bed comes into operative position immediately before the impression table begins to roll against the forme and is lifted as soon as the rolling operation is completed. The web or sheets 48 being treated are then moved forward for the next operation.
