Abstract
743,231. Anti-dazzle devices. THORNTON, M. H. July 31, 1953, No. 21365/53. Class 97 (1). An anti-glare device for use by motorists comprises a spectacle or like frame having means for dividing the field of vision of an eye into a near-side part in which vision is direct and an off-side part in which vision is through a pair of semi-transparent members one lying forwardly of the other with their near-side edges appearing to the eye to coincide. As shown in Figs. 1 and 6, a bar 14 has clips 32 for attachment to a spectacle frame and has lateral slots 14a in which slide pairs of blocks 15 and 25, one pair over each spectacle lens. Each of the blocks 15, 25 is formed in two parts 15a, 15b and 25a, 25b respectively, held together by screws 18, 19, 30 and 31, having internal slots 15d, 25d respectively supporting light-transmitting members 17, 26, Fig. 5, located one on each side of the respective spectacle lens. The member 17 is of segmented shape and the member 26 of bar-like shape, the members at their upper end being respectively rotatably located in the slots 15d and 25d by engagement of projections 17c, 26c with depressions 15e, 25e in the blocks 15, 25. The members 17, 26 may thus be angularly adjusted and then clamped in position by tightening the screws 18, 19, 30, 31. In operation the blocks 15, 25 are adjusted laterally by operation of screws 20, 27 mounted on the bar 14 and engaging the blocks until the edges of the member 17, 26 are located so as to provide a sharp division between vision of the side of the road through the clear portions of the spectacle lens, and vision of the centre of the road and of the headlights of approaching vehicles through the screws 17 and 26, the provision of two screws for each eye ensuring such sharp division. A modification is described for wearing in the manner of spectacles.
