Abstract

743,128. Permanent waving. SARTORY, P. K., and BUNFORD, L. J. Jan. 8, 1953 [Nov. 6, 1952], No. 28028/52. Class 131. Means for carrying out a method of permanent waving, and applied as a combined unit to a tress of hair wound on a curler, comprises a sheet of moisture-proof, flexible material to surround the curler, means for evolving heat stationarily positioned relatively to the sheet and means for retaining the sheet so..that the two opposite edges are urged into close pressure contact near the roots of the tress. As shown, a wetted exothermic pad 15 is placed between the jaws of a spring clamp 4 and a sheet 1 of rubber, secured to the edges 5 of the clamp, the clamp being then placed on a tress of hair retained in coiled condition on a curler rod 11 by an elastic cord 12. In modifications the pad 15 is received in a pocket formed on the outer side of the sheet by a strip of material or by overlapped members secured together by press studs and mounted on opposite edges of the sheet which are provided with press stud fastenings or are formed as rigid tubular members through which a string is passed, the string being pulled tight to prevent steam or water reaching the scalp. The sheet may be perforated to allow steam to reach the coiled tress or escape into the atmosphere. The unit may include a mat preheated or heated by an electric current and articulated to wrap round the coiled hair.
