Abstract

742,726. Automatic temperature control systems; automatic regulators. NAPIER & SON, Ltd., D. Feb. 18, 1954 [Feb. 27, 1953], No. 5627/53. Class 38 (4). Aircraft de-icing heaters 14 are connected through contacts 11 to a D.C. or A.C. supply when a relay 24 is energized by operation of a manual switch 21. Under these conditions a winding 15 of a carbon pile regulator 16 is connected across a shunt 13 in the heater circuit so that a bridge circuit including regulator 16 renders a rectifier 30 conductive to shunt the bridge output. But heater resistance rises with increase of heater temperature, thus reducing the energization of winding 15 until, at the predetermined temperature, the bridge output polarity reverses and rectifier 30 is non- conductive. Relay 31 is then operated by the bridge output to de-energize heaters 14 through relays 37 and 24. A relay 46 is also de-energized by contacts 45 of relay 24 to connect a second winding 41 of regulator 16 in series with heaters 14 in a high resistance circuit across the supply. The current in this circuit, which is too small to cause appreciable heating, rises as the heater temperature falls until, at a predetermined temperature the bridge is balanced and the heaters switched on again. Heater temperature is thus maintained between two limits. A carbon pile regulator 27 in the bridge circuit responds to supply voltage and compensates for variations of the latter. A carbon pile regulator 42 responds to the voltage across the heaters during cooling and maintains that voltage constant to increase the corresponding current change in winding 41. A suitable construction of carbon pile is shown in Fig. 2 in which the carbon stack 16 is housed in a tubular armature 53 mounted on flexible spiders 54, 55. Windings 15 and 41 act on the armature in opposition to a spring 64 the forcedeflection characteristic of which is adjustable by a threaded core 66. Pile contacts 51, 52 are connected to lead 62 and the casing respectively.
