Abstract

742,600. Heating liquids electrically. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and SMITH, R. Feb. 26, 1954 [March 4, 1953], No. 6023/53. Class 39(3). [Also in Group XIII] An instantaneous steam generator consists of an inner container 2 of corrosion-resisting steel covered with insulating material 4 and housed in an outer casing 1, the container 2 being three parts filled with a loosely piled mass 3 of heat storage material preferably consisting of short lengths 5 of round cast iron bar or alternatively of pieces of flint or concrete and being provided with a water inlet and drain pipe 9 and a steam outlet pipe 12. Two or more sealed tubes 6 project horizontally into the mass 3 and form pockets for electric heaters 7 e.g. one kilowatt each. In operation, the mass 3 is heated to 500‹ to 600‹C. over a period of several hours. When steam is required, water is fed to the bottom of the container through a valve 11 and flashes into steam as it contacts mass 3. As the lower bars 5 are cooled, the water level rises and water, which is preheated by the residual heat in the lower bars, is evaporated by those above. After use the water in the container is drained off through a valve 10 and the mass 3 reheated.
