Abstract
742,575. Reducing ores; methods of melting metals. CROFTS (ENGINEERS), Ltd. Aug. 8, 1952 [Dec. 11, 1951], No. 28990/51. Classes 72 and 82(1). [Also in Group XII] Swarf or other powdered or granular metal, or pulverized ore, is introduced into a shaft furnace at a point immediately above the melting zone so that it is carried down into the melting zone by the movement of the main charge in order to prevent its ejection by the draught before melting, and to reduce the time in which it is subjected to oxidation and sulphur absorption. As shown, the material is delivered from a feed chamber 13 to a recess 9 in the furnace lining 5 by means of a feed ram 14 reciprocated by a motor 15.
