Abstract

742,555. Pipe joints. EMCO BRASS MANUFACTURING CO., Ltd. July 22, 1954 [Aug. 4, 1953], No. 21507/53. Class 99(1). In a rotary pipe joint comprising two tubular elements 3, 4, having abutting flanges 13, 14, nuts 12a and studs 12 for holding together the flanges, a tubular member' 5 secured to one pipe 2 and journalled in the element 4, for example, whilst the element 3 is fixed to the other pipe 1, the member 5 terminating within the bore of the element 4, and sealing means 15 disposed between the element 3 and the member 5, the studs are of such length as to enable the elements 3 and 4 to be sufficiently separated to permit removal and replacement of the sealing means without complete separation of the elements. The pipes 1 and 2 are welded to the element 3 and member 5, respectively, the member 5 being journalled in the element 4 by ball bearings 6, 7 and having an opening 8 through which the latter are inserted or removed, the opening being normally closed by a castellated-threaded plug 9 locked by a split pin ; the plug carries a grease nipple 10. Oil seals 11 and 17 are disposed between the element 4 and the elements 3 and member 5, respectively. The sealing means 15 comprises a rubber packing-seal 15a between a packing ring 15b and a seal ring 15c, and the member 5 has a central boss 16 to deform the seal assembly ; the surfaces against which the seal assembly bears are polished. In a modification, the pipes are threaded into the element and member and the inner and outer seal rings are transposed ; the grease nipple is dispensed with and the plug is retained by a set screw. The boss is enlarged to extend into a recess in the surrounding element although it may be replaced by projections serving to locate the elements upon assembly or the fastening alone may perform this function. Two or more joints may be used together with their rotational axes at right angles and interconnected by an elbow.
