Abstract

Formaldehyde polymers are made by polymerizing, e.g continuously, anhydrous monomeric formaldehyde under anhydrous conditions in the presence of a compound of the formula <FORM:0742135/IV(a)/1> where M is an element with an atomic number of 15 to 51 from sub-group B of Group V of the Periodic Table and in which R, R1 and R11 are monovalent hydrocarbon radicals, e.g. triphenyl, tritolyl, tributyl and trixylylphosphine, trinaphthylarsine, tricyclohexylphosphine, methyldioctylstibine, and dixylyl ethyl arsine. Polymerization is preferably effected in the presence of an organic liquid inert to formaldehyde, e.g. diethyl ether, dimethyl ether, propane, butane, pentane, hexane, heptane, decane, cyclohexane, decahydronaphthalene, xylene, benzene, toluene, and methylene chloride. The polymers may be moulded or made into films or bars.
