741,995. Making composite bearing material. GLACIER METAL CO., Ltd. July 22, 1953 [Aug. 26, 1952], No. 21402/52. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). Jointing by rolling.-A method of producing composite bearing material of the kind comprising a steel backing and a bearing surface layer of aluminium alloy bonded to the backing with or without an interlayer of a metal such as silver, copper, nickel or pure aluminium is characterized in that an aluminium alloy, e.g. containing 5 to 50 per cent of tin and having a relatively low critical temperature, is bonded to a steel backing by applying in a reducing atmosphere the aluminium alloy at a relatively low temperature to the steel or coated steel backing which has been heated sufficiently above the said critical temperature, e.g. to about 520‹ C., to ensure that when the layers are rolled together the temperature at the interface will be sufficiently high to effect the bond. ing, the temperature of at least the major part of the aluminium alloy layer being maintained below the critical temperature thereof, the composite material finally being rolled to effect substantial reduction in the thickness of the aluminium alloy layer, e.g. 30 per cent to 40 per cent. The aluminium alloy layer is cooled during the rolling by using a cooled roller or by sprays of cooling fluid. The material may be further reduced in thickness by cold rolling in one or more steps with intermediate heat treatments to 'improve ductility. Specification 666,087, [Group II], is referred to.
