Abstract

741,835. Cellar doors; manhole covers. POOLE, P. May, 14, 1954 [March 4, 1953; May 14, 1953], Nos. 6033/53 and 13559/53. Classes 20(3) and 107. [Also in Group XXX] A door for a cellar or inspection chamber having rollers 15, Fig. 1, which run along spaced guides 3, 4, and movable from a closed to an open position by a translatory and a rotary movement has abutments 21 engageable with fixed supports to maintain the door releasably in an open position, Fig. 4, the arrangement being such that the door can be raised and displaced along the guides into an open position at an angle to the guides. As shewn two doors 1, 2, form a closure for an opening in a pavement leading to an underground cellar. Each door comprises a sheet-metal plate having secured to its underface a frame consisting of angle irons 9, 10, 11, holes 12 in irons 11 enabling a padlock to be used. A depending lug 13 secured to each angle iron 9, 10 carries an axle pin 14 for a roller 15, the pins 14 on each door being axially aligned. The fixed frame which is secured in the cellar opening is formed of channel-section members 3, 4, opening inwardly and angle members 5, 6, to which are secured metal strips 7, 8, respectively the upper edges of the latter being coplanar with the surface of the pavement and the upper faces of doors 1, 2 in their closed position. Flanges 16, 17 secured to the upper and lower webs respectively of the channel members 3, 4 engage peripheral grooves in the rollers 15. Cut-outs 20 in the doors allow pivoting about the rollers 15 and form the abutments 21, the gap being closed by plates 30 secured to the upper webs of the side members 3, 4. To open door 1 after the padlock has been removed from holes 12 and bolt 25 retracted, a lifting tool is inserted in key-way 22 and the door lifted by swinging about the axis of rollers 15. The door is then slid until one roller 15 drops into a pocket 18 formed by shortening the corresponding flange 17 and shoulder 21 passes through a slot 29 in the upper web of member 3 and flange 16. The other shoulder 21 of door 1 rests upon the upper web of member 4. Handles 24 on the doors 1, 2 assist in opening and closing, and after both doors are open stay bars 41 may be engaged in slots 40 therein to form guard rails. In modifications, pockets 18 are provided at the ends of each channel member and stay bar 41 is formed in two or more parts telescopically secured together, notches being formed at the opposite ends of the bar for engagement in corresponding notches in the doors. When the doors are open, a device 32 (see Group XXX) may be pivoted into position to form a bearing for rope used to lower barrels into the cellar. According to the Provisional Specification a single rod on each door may support the rollers 15 and angle irons 11 may be omitted.
