Abstract
RDX (cyclo-trimethylentrinitramine) is obtained in the form of fine uniform crystals by mixing a jet of a hot, filtered RDX solution in acetone with a jet of water having a temperature below 30 DEG C. (see Group III). The jets impinge at an angle of 60-90 degrees. A small proportion of wax may be included in the acetone solution to produce wax-coated RDX, the wax acting as a desensitizer. Crystals sizes of 1m to 100m may be obtained by adjusting the mass ratio of acetone solution to water, by varying the temperature of the water and the size of the jet nozzles.ALSO:<PICT:0741756/III/1> RDX is crystallized from acetone solution by precipitation with water, jets of solution and water being arranged to impinge on each other at an angle of between 60 degrees and 90 degrees and the water temperature being less than 30 DEG C. As shown hot filtered acetone solution is fed at 13 to a chamber 11 provided with nozzles 15 and a hot water or steam jacket 16 to prevent precipitation of RDX by cooling in the chamber 11 and nozzles 15. A conduit 12 and chamber 10 with nozzles 14 directed towards the nozzles 15 and an angle of between 60 degrees and 90 degrees are provided for the precipitating water. The mixed streams may fall directly into a centrifuge for separation of the crystals. The acetone solution may contain a wax which coats the formed crystals and desensitizes the RDX. Figures are given for the effect on crystal size of variations in flow rates, nozzle size and water temperature.
