Abstract

An ink varnish comprises a water-insoluble acidic synthetic resin having an acid number of at least 90 dissolved in an organic solvent which is a monohydric alcohol, glycerol, a glycol, a glycol ester or a glycol ether (which glycols, glycol ethers or glycol esters contain 2-8 carbon atoms) diluted with a minor proportion of an aqueous solution of urea in which the urea is in a concentration of from 20 to 60 per cent by weight. Inks are formed by adding to the varnish a suitable pigment, e.g. carbon black, titanium dioxide, red pigment or milori blue. Specified synthetic resins are polymerized rosin, hydrogenated rosin, adducts of rosin with alphabeta-unsaturated dicarboxylic acids, alkyds, adducts of terpenes with alphabetaunsaturated dicarboxylic acids and partly esterified resins. Specified solvents are methanol, ethanol and propanol; glycerol; ethylene-, diethylene-, triethylene-, dipropylene-, butylene 1.2- and hexylene-glycols; the monobutyl-, monomethyl- or monoethyl-ethers of ethylene glycol or diethylene glycol; ethylene glycol monomethyl ether acetate, diethylene glycol monoethyl ether acetate, and triethylene glycol methyl ether acetate. Examples disclose ink varnishes containing an aqueous solution of urea, maleic modified rosin, and ethylene glycol or diethylene glycol. Specification 741,750 is referred to.ALSO:An ink varnish comprises a water-insoluble acidic resin having an acid number of at least 90 dissolved in an organic solvent which is a monohydric alcohol, glycerol, a glycol, a glycol ester or glycol ether which glycols, glycol ethers or glycol esters contain 2-8 carbon atoms diluted with a minor proportion of an aqueous solution of urea in which the urea is in a concentration of from 20 to 60 per cent by weight. Inks (see Group XV) are made by adding to the varnish a suitable pigment, e.g. carbon black titanium dioxide, red pigment or milori blue. The resin may be a synthetic resin (see Group IV(a)) or a natural resin, e.g. rosin, copal, sandarac and gum mastic. Specified solvents are methanol, ethanol and propanol; glycerol; ethylene-, diethylene-, triethylene-, dipropylene-, butylene 1.2-, and hexyleneglycols, the monobutyl-, monomethyl- or monoethyl-ethers of ethylene glycol or diethylene glycol; ethylene glycol monomethyl ether acetate, diethylene glycol monoethyl ether acetate and triethylene glycol methyl ether acetate. Examples disclose ink varnishes containing an aqueous solution of urea and (1) A gum mastic and ethanol. (2) Maleic modified rosin and ethylene glycol. (3) (a) Water white rosin and methanol or dipropylene glycol (b) maleic modified rosin and diethylene glycol and (c) gum sandarac and ethanol. Specification 741,750 is referred to.
