Abstract

<PICT:0741519/IV(a)/1> Cellulose xanthate, after being initially or extensively dissolved, is subjected to completion of dissolution and filtered, de-aerated and ripened in a system of vessels connected in series and provided with stirring mechanisms, the viscose being constantly forced with stirring through the vessels so that it completely fills the spaces in the vessels and is kept out of contact with the air, whereby the viscose is maintained in constant flow during its entire preparation prior to entering a spinning apparatus. Preferably the pumps which supply the viscose to the conduits leading to the spinning nozzles, are fed with a greater quantity of viscose than that which they take up and the excess is returned to the last mixing vessel of the series. Preferably also the stirring mechanisms in the vessels are provided with transverse bars arranged on stirrer arms so that they sweep with a small spacing over the peripheral surface and end walls of each vessel. The various vessels may be provided with heating or cooling devices and pressure gauges. Oils or pigments, e.g. titanium dioxide suspensions, may be added to the viscose. As shown, cellulose xanthate is dissolved in the vessels 1 and several charges of viscose are fed into a blender 2 by means of a pump 3. The viscose passes into a boiler 4 and air is removed by boiling under reduced pressure. It is then forced through storage vessels 6 which are kept completely filled with the liquid. The pumps 7 are provided with by-pass pipes 8. Ripening takes place as the viscose passes through the system and may be completed during the advance through filter 9 and vessels 10. The viscose is then pumped through filter 11 and vessels 12. Further de-aeration may be effected, if desired, in a boiler arranged in the pipe-line at position 14. Further filtration takes place in the filter 13 and the viscose is conveyed to the spinning apparatus by way of mixing vessels 15, pump 18 and, if necessary, through filter press 16. The final pipes of the spinning apparatus may be connected to a collecting tube so that excess of viscose supplied thereto may be returned by means of pumps 19 through pipe 17 to one of the last mixing vessels 15, where it is intimately mixed with the main stream of viscose. For taking up the excess of viscose if interruptions in the normal flow occur, there may be provided one or more vessels in parallel with vessels 6, 12 and 15 and filter 9.
