Abstract

741,399. Electrolytic production of organic fluorine compounds. FARBENFABRIKEN BAYER AKT.-GES. Sept. 18, 1953 [Oct. 8, 1952], No. 25862/53. Class 41. A process of producing organic fluorine compounds comprises subjecting bromine and/or iodine derivatives of aliphatic hydrocarbons containing up to three carbon atoms to electrolysis in hydrogen fluoride in the presence of an electrolyte. Bromine and/or iodine in the molecule is/are replaced by fluorine, any chlorine in the molecule remaining unchanged, while any double bonds are saturated with fluorine. The electrolyte may be water or an alkali metal fluoride, and a solid substance promoting dispersion, such as calcium fluoride, may be present. In examples: 1,1-difluoro- 1,2,2,2-tetrachloroethane is produced from 1,1- dibromo - 1,2,2,2 - tetrachloroethane, 1,1 - 2- trifluoro - 1,2,2 - trichloroethane from 1- bromo - 1,2,2 - trichloroethylene, 1,1,2,2- tetrafluoro - 1,2 - dichloroethane from 1,2- dibromo-1,2-dichloroethylene, and 1,1,1,2,2,3- hexafluoro - 3,3 - dichloropropane from 1,1,1,2- tetrafluoro - 3,3 - dichloro - 2,3 - dibromopropane. The electrolysis may be carried out at a temperature between - 80‹ and +50‹ C., at 5 to 8 volts and at an anode current density of 1 to 20 amps/dm<SP>2</SP>. The substance to be fluorinated may be dissolved in a fluorine resistant solvent, such as C 2 F 3 Cl 3 .
