Abstract
741,322. Television. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. March 29, 1954 [April 2, 1953], No. 9207/53. Drawings to Specification. Class 40 (3). The " surround " of a screen on which a moving picture is displayed (e.g. television or cinematographic pictures) is formed from one or more electroluminescent panels, the excitation voltage for which is modulated according to the average picture brightness. The panels comprise a coating of phosphor (e.g. zinc sulphide) spread over a transparent conducting surface mounted on a sheet of glass and backed by a metallic (e.g. vaporized aluminium) coating between which and the transparent conducting surface the excitation voltage is applied, the "surround" being formed by a frame constructed from these panels. The excitation voltage may be derived either from a separate oscillator or from the line time-base circuit or the (separate) E.H.T. oscillator of a television receiver and is modulated in amplitude by video signals preferably supplied via a smoothing circuit (to prevent flicker). Television receivers having A.G.C. circuits with suitable time constants provide such smoothed signals. Alternatively the modulating video signals may be employed without smoothing by employing a long-delay phosphor. Specifications 460,508, [Group XX], 531,295 and 534,973 are referred to.
