Abstract
741,150. Mine roof supports. DOWTY HYDRAULIC UNITS, Ltd. Feb. 23, 1954 [Feb. 25, 1953; March 25, 1953], Nos. 5311/53 and 8283/53. Class 20(2). The upper prop part 11 of a telescopic fluid pressure operated pit prop is adapted to extend into direct supporting engagement with the mine roof, and is provided with additional hydraulic thrust means adapted to engage and load a pair of roof bars B, B<SP>1</SP>, disposed one at one side and the other at the opposite side of the prop. In Fig. 1 the additional hydraulic thrust means consists of a piston 30 slidable within an extension 11a of the upper prop part 11. Pressure fluid to actuate the piston 30 is delivered to a pressure chamber 43 from a reservoir 18 in the upper prop part 11 by the same pump 19 which delivers the pressure fluid from the reservoir 18 into the main pressure chamber 22 in the lower prop part 14. Separate relief valves, Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown), each capable of manual and automatic operation, are associated with the pressure chambers 22 and 43 so that manually controlled or automatic relief pressure may occur in either one of these chambers independently of the other chamber.. A member 35 adapted to engage and guide the roof bars B. B<SP>1</SP>, is pivotally mounted on a pin 32, which is carried by the piston 30 and extends through slots 33 in the extension 11a. The pin 30 passes through closely fitting holes in a dirt excluding sleeve 34 slidable upon the extension 11a. The upper end of the prop which has direct engagement with the roof carries a short captive bar member 91 capable of rocking movement to distribute the load evenly over a suitable roof area. In a modification, Fig. 6 (not show-n), the additional hydraulic thrust means is constituted by an annular chamber surrounding the upper tube of the prop. In another modification, Fig. 5 (not shown), the additional hydraulic thrust means is in two parts constituted by two hydraulic jack devices for association with the two roof bars B, B<SP>1</SP> respectively, the jack devices being situated externally of and carried by the upper tube of the prop.
