Abstract

741,125. Liquid fuel burner apparatus. BAIER, O., BAIER, S., BAIER, L., BAIER, W., BAIER, W., and SCHLUMPRECHT, [nÚe BAIER], E., [trading as BAIER KOMM.- GES., W.]. July 2,1951 [July 7, 1950; Aug. 1, 1950; Sept. 28, 1950 ; Nov. 15, 1950 ; Dec. 14, 1950], No. 15656/51. Class 75(1). [Also in Group XIII] A vehicle heater comprises a liquid fuel burner for heating a fluid heating medium, a combustion chamber, means for feeding the heating medium independently of means for feeding combustion air, separate conduits for combustion air, combustion gases, and-heating medium, respectively, and having means, e.g. an electric motor, disposed outside the combustion chamber for driving means for feeding fuel to the burner and having its axis coaxial with the axis of the burner and with the axis of symmetry of the combustion chamber, the latter being surrounded coaxially by a heat exchanger formed by the conduit for the combustion gases and by at least a part of the conduit or one of the conduits for the heating medium. A pump 5, Fig. 1, supplying the liquid fuel to the burner, a blower 6 supplying air for combustion from an inlet 16 to the conbustion chamber 12 and an impeller 2 supplying the heating medium, viz., air, are driven by a common electric motor 3. The burner comprises a rotary frusto-conical member 11 to which fuel is fed by a pipe 17 to be ejected via apertures 10 surrounding a frustoconical baffle 9 through an annular gap 14 between a further rotary baffle 13 and the outer edge of the member 11. The combustion air is impelled by the blower 6 through an annular passage 15 to impinge upon and to carry the fuel spray into the combustion chamber 12 and past an annular baffle 21 to an after combustion chamber 23. The exhaust gases pass through four openings 28 to an annular chamber 26 disposed between the chambers 12, 23 and a surrounding casing 31 so as to form annular conduits 32, 33 for the heating air, which is impelled by the blower 2 from an inlet 30 to outlet apertures 34. The pipe 16 supplying fuel to the pump 5 is disposed in the inlet 18 for the combustion air, which air also flows over the pump 5 so that any small leakages of fuel at these parts are carried into the combustion zone. Any excess fuel impinging on a part 20a of the conibustion chamber wall immediately surrounding the burner passes through an opening 15a to an annular recess 28a from which it passes through a collecting pipe 28 disposed in the exhaust outlet 27 for the combustion gases in the chamber 26. In a modified construction the rotary baffle 13 is omitted and stationary vanes are provided adjacent the combustion air blower 6 to suppress the rotation of the combustion air before it impinges on the fuel spray. In another construction the driving motor is disposed between the fuel pump and the combustion air blower, and in a further modification the fuel pump and combustion air blower are connected to the driving motor through a clutch which when disengaged enables the motor to driveonly the impeller 2 which then supplies ventilating air. The heating air may be supplied to the heater through a funnel placed in the vehicle slip stream, the air after being heated passing into the vehicle through a valve controlled conduit, or, alternatively, the air may be supplied through a louvre of inclined metal strips in the vehicle side wall or through a funnel placed adjacent the cooling fan for the radiator of the engine, or through a grid at the inlet end of a conduit containing an additional blower. In the plant illustrated in Fig. 10 cold air entering a funnel 110 is mixed with the heated air at the outlet 112 of the air heater 111 and the mixture is distributed over the floor of a vehicle through a pipe system 114 having air discharge slots 115 or hooded pipes 116. A throttle valve 118 in the cold air pipe is controlled by a thermostat 117. In a hot water system for heating a vehicle, illustrated in Fig. 11, water supplied through a pipe 128 is fed by a pump 120 to an annular jacket 124 having fins 126 and surrounding the rear part 122 of the combustion chamber, the heated water being circulated through the vehicle by the pipe 132 and returned to the pipe 128. The pump 120 is driven by the motor 3 which drives the fuel pump 5 and the combustion air blower 6.
