Abstract

740,590. Lubricating; bearings. GLACIER METAL CO., Ltd. Aug. 18, 1954 [Sept. 7, 1953], No. 24662/53. Classes 12 (1) and 12 (3). A plain bearing or plain bearing assembly for railway vehicles comprises one or more airtight reservoirs communicating with one or more bleed holes in the bearing surface in a zone subject to build up of oil pressure during running so that air in the reservoirs is compressed by oil forced through the holes during running and thereby causes counterflow of oil to the bearing surface when the vehicle is stopped for short periods. As shown in Fig. 1, an upper half bearing unit 1 is fitted with a bearing liner formed with one or more bleed holes 4 and incorporates an airtight reservoir 3 communicating through the holes 4 with the bearing surface of a journal 5 dipping into an oil bath 6. In a modification shown in Fig. 2, the airtight reservoir 3 is remote from the bearing liner 2 and communicates through one or more conduits 10 with one or more bleed holes 4 in the liner. The reservoir includes a portion 11 movable against a pre-loaded spring 12. The bearing may be lubricated by an oil flinger or by a roller device, for example, a spring-loaded roller formed with grooves or with a screw thread and arranged simultaneously to contact the underside of the journal and to dip into an oil sump.
