Abstract
740,473. Electroluminescence. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., BATE, H. C., BOWTELL, J. N., and MILES, E. E. March 12, 1954 [March 13, 1953], No. 7018/53. Class 39 (1). The luminescent sandwich of an electroluminescent device is covered with a layer of synthetic resin which is substantially impervious to moisture and extends into sealing contact with the transparent insulating support. Polythene, mica-filled shellac and other thermoplastic or thermo-setting resins may be used and colouring matter may be incorporated. Particles of molten resin may be sprayed on by a flamespraying powder pistol. A flat square of glass 1 is coated on one surface with a transparent conducting layer 2 by treating the hot glass with stannic chloride in the presence of moisture leaving an uncoated portion 3. A rectangular sheet of copper foil 6 is attached to one edge by a conducting paint, e.g. silver dust or silvercoated copper flakes in a binder. A layer 9 of zinc sulphide in nitro-cellulose is coated on, followed by a layer 10 of an alkyd resin in butyl acetate. An overlapping sheet of foil 11 is applied to the edge of layer 10 at the place corresponding to the uncoated part of conducting layer 2, the part over foil 6 is masked off and a coating of aluminium evaporated over the surface. Polythene resin is sprayed on at 220‹ C. and the layer may overlap the face of the glass remote from the conducting layers. The foils 6, 11 are then exposed by cutting away the overlying layers, the exposed areas comprising the terminals. The aluminium layer has a thickness of 0.05-0.1 microns and acts as a fuse upon breakdown of the insulating layer 8. The exposed areas of foil may be on either the face or the edge of the device. Specification 717,169 is referred to.
